Abstract:

Marriage has traditionally been regarded as a significant milestone in a woman’s life across many cultures. However, an increasing number of women are consciously choosing to remain unmarried beyond the age of 40. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences, motivations, and perspectives of women who have chosen singlehood over marriage. Using a phenomenological research design, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women aged 40 years and above who had never married. Thematic analysis revealed six major themes: embracing personal autonomy, prioritizing career and self-development, family caregiving responsibilities, negative perceptions of marriage based on lived or observed experiences, inability to find a compatible partner, and redefining happiness beyond marriage. The findings suggest that remaining unmarried is often an intentional and empowering life choice rather than a consequence of circumstance. The study highlights the importance of challenging societal stereotypes surrounding unmarried women and promoting acceptance of diverse life trajectories.
