Abstract

The pursuit of development in the contemporary world increasingly calls for approaches that move beyond economic growth to address ecological sustainability, ethical responsibility, social well-being, and cultural identity. In this context, Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) offer a rich civilizational resource for rethinking India’s developmental trajectory. This paper explores the relevance of India’s diverse knowledge traditions in reimagining development through a critical engagement between civilizational wisdom and contemporary knowledge. It examines the contributions and continuing relevance of IKS across key domains, including holistic education, scientific inquiry, mathematics, healthcare, sustainable economic practices, environmental conservation, ethics, and governance. The paper argues that India’s intellectual heritage should neither be confined to the past nor accepted uncritically; rather, relevant knowledge traditions must be studied, validated, and thoughtfully adapted to contemporary contexts. Concepts such as dharma, lokasangraha, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, and holistic human development provide perspectives that can inform contemporary debates on responsible governance, sustainability, social welfare, and human well-being. The paper further contends that meaningful engagement with IKS can help establish a constructive dialogue between tradition and modernity, enabling India to pursue technological and economic advancement while remaining ethically grounded, ecologically conscious, and culturally rooted. It concludes that reclaiming and critically engaging with India’s civilizational wisdom can contribute to a more holistic, sustainable, inclusive, and humane vision of the country’s future.
