Abstract
Mental health has emerged as a major concern in contemporary education due to the increasing prevalence of stress, anxiety, emotional disturbances, and psychosocial challenges among school-going adolescents. Educational institutions are therefore expected to adopt holistic approaches that promote not only academic achievement but also the physical, emotional, social, and psychological well-being of students. Yoga, an ancient Indian system of physical, mental, and spiritual practices, has gained global recognition as an effective intervention for promoting holistic health and well-being. Beyond its physical benefits, yoga cultivates mindfulness, emotional regulation, self-awareness, resilience, concentration, and positive interpersonal relationships, all of which are fundamental to maintaining good mental health.
This theoretical paper examines yoga as a holistic educational intervention for enhancing mental health among secondary school students. Drawing upon classical yogic philosophy, educational psychology, positive psychology, and contemporary empirical literature, the paper explores the conceptual relationship between yoga and mental health. It discusses the multidimensional nature of yoga, including Asana (physical postures), Pranayama (breath regulation), Dhyana (meditation), and relaxation techniques, and explains how these practices contribute to psychological well-being through physiological, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural pathways. The paper further highlights the role of yoga in fostering self-regulation, stress management, emotional stability, resilience, attention, and overall psychological functioning within school settings.
The paper argues that yoga should not be viewed merely as a physical activity but as an educational philosophy that supports the holistic development of learners. Integrating structured yoga programmes into secondary school education aligns with the objectives of holistic education and the vision of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes learners’ physical, mental, emotional, and ethical development. The paper concludes that systematic implementation of yoga in schools can serve as a preventive and promotive mental health strategy, contributing to healthier, emotionally balanced, and academically engaged adolescents. It also identifies directions for future theoretical and empirical research on yoga-based educational interventions.
